Our Services

Sandra’s House offers guidance, instruction, and training for students who follow distance learning and online programs. We are not a school, but a support service for various curriculum providers, such as CAPS, Cambridge, and GED (and pre-GED from age 12). We recommend Cambrilearn for online schooling in Caps and Cambridge; and Impaq for Caps homeschooling. We create tailored programs to suit the individual needs of GED learners. Sandra’s House is a small and friendly community of 30-40 students, divided into 4 groups: Grades 4-6, Grades 7-9, GED, and Grades 10-12. We have 4 permanent teachers and several part-time tutors who are experts in their fields. Our teaching methods and class arrangements vary according to the grades. We work closely with parents to understand their needs and expectations to provide a tailored service. We offers lessons in both English and Afrikaans.

Class Structure

Group classes take place on weekdays from 8:00 to 13:45, and individual classes from 14:00 to 17:00. We charge learners based on how many days per week they attend lessons.

Our class formats vary from subject to subject, but we design our classes to promote active learning. Research has shown that children who sit and listen to classes in a lecture-style format engage passively, reducing their ability to recall and comprehend the course material. Our tutors create class environments where learners interact with the material, solve problems, do projects, exercises, and past papers to fully engage with the lesson material. We use a variety of resources, both online and offline, to ensure that each learner has a comprehensive understanding of what they are taught and can apply this knowledge to their studies and succeed.

Learning is divided into 4 areas: lecturing, rote-learning, active learning, and facilitated self-study.

Lecturing

Lecture-based instruction may not be the most optimal approach to facilitate effective learning. Instead, we use a mix of short classes and videos to teach concepts and explain what’s covered in textbooks.

Rote-Learning

In every subject, there are certain terms and ideas that need to be memorized. We teach learners rote-learning techniques to help them remember facts.

Active Learning

We facilitate workshops where learners actively engage in practical applications, participate in discussions, and complete tasks, all aimed at promoting their understanding and active involvement with the subject matter.

Self-Study

Facilitated self-study lessons are designed to foster skills in comprehension, reading, and study. These techniques also aim to cultivate learners’ self-reliance and self-discipline.
